To School?

Last week we went into Walmart and saw all the "Back to School" signs and supplies everywhere. I'd like someone to tell me where the summer has gone, because I'm certain it just started. I've gotten a lot of questions about whether or not I'll send my kids to school this year and as of now the answer is "yes." I'm not exactly excited about it, but I'm hoping it will be a good experience for them. I guess this "good experience" is contingent on them actually letting Anna into school, but that's another story for another time.

A few weeks ago I had a good friend in need of a school-bus-birthday-cake for her daughter. What she didn't know when she agreed to let me have a go at it is that I have no experience making birthday cakes other than the kind in a 9x13 Pyrex with frosting slathered on top. I had lofty dreams and had to spend a good bit of time calculating exactly how I'd bring my plan to fruition. In the process I learned all about fondant (which typically doesn't taste very good, but is really fun to work with). So I did a combination of fondant (for the windows) and frosting over the rest. I actually found a recipe online for some really great fondant that is SO easy to make and even easier to work with. It actually tastes decent too, so I've tucked that away for future use.

Anyway, this was our completely edible bus cake driving on an Oreo road. I hope my girls will be traveling a path as sweet on their way to school. I'm sure they wouldn't mind 'Nilla wafer faces as companions either.

You are so talented Nicole. I love the cake. You did a fabulous job on it. Wish you lived near so that I could put your talents to use. Katelyn just had a birthday and she got a store bought, nothing special, kind of cake and I don't have the patience for doing something like what you did. Man, I need you to move to AZ, and of course I would want you here for more than just cake making. :)

You are talented Nicole! Great job on the cake! I would not be able to do that, just buy it!

I am a little nervous but excited to take my oldest to Kindergarten this year. It is coming up fast. They start the second week of August Arizona. I know I would not be able to home school for me or him. I am impressed that you did it for your girls and I am sure they loved and enjoyed every minute of it. It will be interesting to see what they think of public school. You can always go back to home schooling if you like and that works best for you and your kids.

I am debating on having my son take the bus to school. We live so close and I contemplate walking, but in 100+ degree weather in the afternoon, I don't think so. And then there is the mess of driving and waiting in line at the school. We will see.

love the cake!! so cute. As for back to school...it goes on the shelves the 5th of July. And all the summer stuff goes on clearance. Retail likes to rush things. Come august, the halloween stuff will be out. ugh

Everything you touch is magical! So cute. Funny, I used the same fondant recipe to make Abbie a cake. I hope you are having a great summer!

I think it's amazing, but then you've probably seen some of the creations I've come up with (pretty scary).

What's the deal with Anna?

Nicole that is a super cute cake. You should enter it into a contest.

Good work, Nicole! I have been thinking of entering fondant land myself. I might have to have you e-mail me that recipe. I'm tired of doing those little stars, millions of them, to decorate cakes. You know, those stars, with frosting? And you just make rows and rows of them to "color in" part of your cake. Yuck.

If only I could be that successful the first time I tried to make a cute cake.
